How to use this calculator
Choose your filing status, enter your ordinary taxable income (your income excluding the gain), and the size of your capital gain. Then pick the holding period. The rate for long-term gains depends on your total taxable income — ordinary income plus the gain — measured against the 0%, 15%, and 20% breakpoints. Short-term gains have no special rate: they are simply added to ordinary income and taxed at your normal bracket.
About the 3.8% NIIT
The Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) is an extra 3.8% surtax on investment income, including capital gains. It applies when your income exceeds $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly. The calculator flags whether your combined income crosses that line so you can plan for the additional tax.
For the brackets around that gain, use the federal tax calculator. Also see the federal income tax calculator and the state tax quick reference.
